When you think of yoga, what comes to your mind? Calming water. Birds chirping. People having sex in crazy yoga positions? Okay, the last one, probably not. But with international yoga day here, it’s time you learned the kinky side of yoga (the side you really want to know about).
What is yoga sex?
Good question. Oh, and there is a difference between regular yoga and yoga sex. Yoga sex is the use of traditional yoga during sex. It can be one person holding a pose while being penetrated or both partners holding the same or a different pose together.
Is yoga sex good for you?
Umm, it’s yoga and sex put together - how can it not be good for you? But in all seriousness, yes, yoga sex is good for you. And there are a few benefits of yoga sex you should consider:
- Increases strength and stamina: While in yoga positions, you’re exercising and strengthening the muscles in your body. So, by doing yoga, you’ll not only feel stronger but will be able to hold difficult poses longer in the bedroom.
- Stimulates blood flow: If you’re practicing yoga, it can help stimulate blood flow (and that’s what you need during sex). By increasing blood flow, you can improve arousal, lubrication, and pleasure.
- Improves flexibility: Tight hips? Yeah, I feel you. With yoga sex, you’re holding poses, stretching out your muscles, and engaging in deeper stretches while having sex. Becoming more flexible can help you feel more comfortable trying out new positions and alleviate any pain you may have in your body.
- Encourages mindfulness: Yoga teaches you how to listen to your body and practice mindfulness. By becoming more mindful, you can feel more present during sex and have a deeper sexual experience with yourself and your partner.
What is tantric yoga sex?
Now, yoga sex is one thing, but what is tantric yoga sex (I know you’ve probably heard of it before)? Tantric yoga sex and yoga sex aren’t one and the same. Yoga sex is essentially having sex while in yoga positions. But tantric yoga sex is a system of spirituality that takes into account the entire person - body, mind, and soul.
So, it’s not sex in the way we see sex. Rather, sex is just a small part of tantric yoga. Instead, tantric yoga sex helps identify what is blocking us from receiving the most pleasure (spiritually, emotionally, sexually), and gives us techniques to help us unblock ourselves.
By practicing Tantric yoga sex, it can improve your quality of sleep, increase your sexual confidence, improve your intimacy, reduce anxiety and depression, and help you understand yourself on a deeper level.
The best yoga sex positions
Okay, so what are the best yoga sex positions you can try out? Don’t worry; I’m not going to suggest hot yoga and sex - let’s keep things simple to start.
Please note: These positions are not positions for beginner's. If you have any limitations or ailments please consult your physician before trying any of these out.
Downward-facing dog: One partner gets into a V-shape, with their hands and feet on the ground, and head towards the ground (creating a V shape with their body). The other partner can then penetrate or stimulate from behind.
Balasana: A great position for anal! One partner sits on their knees, with their chest resting on their thighs and hands stretched out. The other partner can kneel behind them and penetrate or stimulate the anus.
Bridge pose: The receiving partner lies on the bed, legs bent, and feet on the bed. They press their glutes up to the ceiling. The other partner kneels between their legs and stimulates or penetrates the genitals.
Cobra pose: One partner lies flat on their stomach, with their hands under their shoulders. They then press their upper body up from the surface, creating a snake-like pose. The other partner can come from behind and penetrate or stimulate the genitals. For the receiving partner with vaginas, this pose can offer more intense stimulation.
Savasana: One partner lies flat on the bed, legs spread slightly. The other partner can penetrate by straddling them. This is a good position if you’re looking for mindful and relaxed sex.
Final thoughts
Yoga sex is a great way to dive deeper into your sexual wellness and become more mindful of you and your partner’s sexual experience. If you’re craving a little bit more intimacy, then afterward, sit down together and talk about the experience - how it made you feel and what you want to explore next time. Remember, communication is also a part of sex!
