The main reason for having sex in private is to avoid predators and general interruption. But why would some animals choose to do it in public? Perhaps the most obvious reason is the sign of ownership. By mating in front of their whole colony, they are showing their dominance and how their chosen partner belongs to them.
So, could the same apply to humans or are we simply fascinated by public sex because of the taboo aspect of it? And, if we took the taboo part of it away, would we still find public sex just as appealing? In my opinion, some people would still be attracted to this concept while others would lose interest.

Now that we have looked at why animals have sex in public, why do people do it? As I already mentioned, the taboo of public sex plays a big role in it. But there’s more than that. It can be really fun to break the rules and rebel against what is accepted in our society.
On top of that, public sex is probably not something people get to do every day, so the act itself is extremely exciting and definitely gets the blood pumping and heart racing. In a way, it is like a rare dessert that you only get on special occasions.
And doing something that’s against the rules is thrilling in itself. Public sex is also something that a lot of us fantasize about, perhaps because the idea of letting your inner animal free and indulging in animalistic pleasure is a major turn on.
Last, but not least, like many other sexual practices, it can be a good way to get to know yourself and discover aspects of your identity that are not readily expressed in a mainstream society.
The ethics of public sex
Now that you know why people engage in and fantasize about public sex, it is time to talk about ethics. Yes, the not so fun part of public sex. Unfortunately, we don’t live in an anarchistic world and our actions can have consequences.
First, it should be recognized that public sex is an act of public indecency. And penalties for public indecency can range from fines to criminal charges, depending on the severity of the behavior and the local laws.

Besides legal consequences that you may face for engaging in public sex, it is also important to understand why it is not ethical. While the majority of public sex connoisseurs don’t actually desire to get caught, it is always a risk.
And, if people see you, they might be offended or simply feel uncomfortable because they did not consent in seeing sexual acts in public. Also, depending on the location that you choose to have sex, there is a risk that children might witness your sexual escapades which is a big no no.
Is there a way to make public sex more ethical? Well, perhaps. You could consider having sex on your private property, considering that you are not in your neighbors’ view or attend a sex party where public sex is not only allowed but also expected. This way you can still get the thrill without putting yourself at the risk of breaking the law.
