Sex Education: Solo Play

Everything you need to know about Masturbation

Some of us keep our cards close to our chest when it comes to masturbation. Most of us are hiding secrets about the way we like to pleasure ourselves. Because masturbation and sexual pleasure have been a ‘taboo’ topic in society.

The truth is, some of us do it all the time, others not at all. There is no escaping one of the most natural parts of human nature.

Whilst all our secrets might be a little different, there is one thing that every human being should feel from masturbation; empowerment. Masturbation is one of the most important tools we must use to help us explore our own bodies.

For many, masturbation was the way they learned about what felt good and what felt unpleasant. Masturbation is also a way that allows you to take control of your body and pleasure.

Linguistically speaking, the definition of empowerment means authority and power. However, empowerment can also be classed as a process whereby someone becomes stronger and gains the confidence to take control.

Whilst we might not always necessarily draw links between empowerment and masturbation, there is not a more perfect duo. Masturbation is one of the best ways that we can make ourselves feel better.

Solo-play is a form of ‘body-work. It is the most fundamental part of learning what our body responds to best and what sort of sensations bring us to climax.

Historically speaking, masturbation, in most cultures, was never frowned upon. And certain figures either opposed or celebrated the idea of self-pleasure.

Psychiatrists such as Thomas Szasz have been part of the sexual revolution by even stating “Masturbation is the primary sexual activity of mankind. In the nineteenth century, it was a disease; in the twentieth, it’s a cure.”

This has led to a wave that started changing the perception of masturbation. In 1994, the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Jocelyn Elders, stated that masturbation is part of human sexuality. This statement at the UN meeting on AIDS stirred up controversy and she was later forced to resign.

Shocked by what happened to the doctor, an American sex shop named ‘Good Vibrations’ declared that from here on, the month of May will be known as Masturbation Month. Their aim was to raise awareness about masturbation. The month of May was picked because it symbolizes sexual awakening and because both words start with the letter ‘M’.

But what else can we learn about the history of masturbation?

For one, we know that nothing is considered to be 'normal' or 'strange' when it comes to masturbation. Whether you are in a relationship or single, people always engage in the act of self-pleasure.

It doesn't matter how frequent an individual does it. There is no wrong in masturbating often or masturbating once in a while. Everyone has their own preferences and sexual drive.

If you are having safe masturbation sessions, then you are enjoying a healthy sexual life. Masturbation enhances your sex life but it also enhances the way you communicate with your partner.

Couples also masturbate together. This is called mutual masturbation, and there are many ways for couples to enjoy self-pleasure together. Especially through the use of sex toys. Mutual masturbation allows couples to be intimate with each other and learn about each other’s likes or dislikes.

Couples who are in a long-distance relationship benefit from mutual masturbation. It is often difficult to be intimate over a long distance but by using interactive sex toys, it closes the gap.

As mentioned earlier, masturbation has other health benefits apart from empowerment. Masturbation helps reduce stress, boosts your immune system, reduce the risk of prostate cancer, and benefits your heart. It also helps with sleepless nights and keeps you happy.

However, masturbation routines for most people becomes a bit tedious and repetitive. They are always doing the same thing or face a lack of creativity during their sessions. That is why we have some tips and suggestions for you and your partner to try out.

Despite masturbation being a part of our lives, we never got any formal sexual education about what to do and what not to do. For example, there are several masturbation techniques you can try out.

If you are using interactive sex toys, you can practice edging or control your partner’s device. What about creating a romantic or sexual ambiance for your sessions?

But what you probably don’t know is to make sure that when you masturbate with sex toys, you have to make sure they are clean and kept clean after use. Also, make sure you use body-safe items when masturbating. Some household items may seem like a good idea to use but if you haven’t done your research, avoid using them.

Anything you put in your body or on it should be body-safe. Moreover, the space you are using for your masturbation sessions should be a safe space.

Due to the lack of information about such things, we see that people need to learn more about masturbation.

That is why, in order to educate the world about the powers of self-love and self-care, we have developed an ebook to guide you through it all. We hope you enjoy it!
